'Come and Sing'

January can feel like a very long month and singing is a marvellous way to get through the dreariest of days.  Here's an invitation from us all at Langport Community Choir to 'come and sing' at one of our term time sessions at Huish Episcopi Academy in Langport, led by our talented Musical Director Pete Linnett - Monday evenings 7pm to 9pm.

Winter 2017/2018

Singing in the winter months gives a brilliant lift to spirits and our termly Monday night practice sessions are a great way to minimise hibernation.  And so our new song for early winter, an arrangement of the stirring song 'So Strong' by Labi Siffre; very fitting for a time of year when it can be hard to keep up energy levels

Pete's arrangement of 'Let's Twist Again' was also perfect for getting the circulation going - it's impossible to sing without some sort of hip movement!

It's also been fun this winter to learn new arrangements of carols that many of us have known for a lifetime.  This year Pete offered up a new take on the firm favourite 'Silent Night', which was perfect for our first festive performance at a Montacute House's Lantern of Light evening.

A particularly wet and cold winters evening, we felt very privileged to sing in the Great Hall at Montecute.  With undertones of Christmases past, the magnificant surroundings and a receptive audience made for a very enjoyable experience - and we didn't mind a jot about fetching blue protective shoes and squinting in the ambient light at our carol sheets!

And so following our last festive sing this Monday at Portcullis House in Langport, Pete set up his desk at our Huish Episcopi base for the last time in 2017 - it holds everything we need and forget to bring along each week.  We do our best to keep to the 'learn by ear' tradition, however, holding a word sheet is a great comfort for most at one time or another.

We have had a fabulous year of song in 2017, all made possible by Pete's musical talents and guidance.  The Langport Community Choir Committee would like to wish members past and present and all who love to sing, a very Happy Christmas and New Year.  We look forward to another engaging year of song in 2018 and welcome new members at the start of our next term on Monday 8th January 2018.

Autumn 2017

It is brilliant to have singing to look forward to as the nights start to draw in.  It has been great too meeting up again with fellow singers after the summer and hearing about their adventures.  And of course there is the pleasure of new songs - Pete will always has a collection of lovely new songs to sing after his summer break.  We are really enjoying finding out what he has in store for us and here's a clip of a lovely track we are learning this term.

We are now starting to learn the set for our first autumn performance at Voices Young & Old at St Mary's Church, Huish Episcopi on Friday 10th November.  Many of us remember the lovely evening the last time we took part in this concert and we are really looking forward to another evening of song by groups of all ages.

We are also delighted to be singing again at Montacute House again this Christmas at one of their Lantern of Light evenings.  Sunday 10th December seems an age away just now, however, we all know that the festive season and all it entails will come round all too quickly!

Keep a look out on this page and follow us on Facebook for news updates and information about what we are up to - lots of singing of course!
